Psychiatric diagnoses are not our identities - even if you have one, which is still okay.
You are still God’s child.
You are still called and chosen.
You are still made in God’s image.
You are still seated with Christ in heavenly places.
Psychiatric diagnoses offer an explanation for our mental and emotional struggles. Such as why we may struggle to regulate our emotions, why we may have social anxiety, why our moods oscillate between high highs and very low lows. Psychiatric diagnoses explain why we may seem to have a very high potential for something, but we can’t seem to apply ourselves to pursuing and fulfilling that potential – it always feels like we are huffing and puffing, chasing the wind but with little to nothing to show for it. Psychiatric diagnoses explain why we may feel like misfits and why it seems we can not do basic things expected of us. Psychiatric diagnoses aid in understanding our biological & psychological makeup, in order to help us thrive. God wants us to thrive and be whole. Psychotherapy may just be one of the essential tools God may use to bring us our healing.
"So if you who are evil know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!"- Matthew 7:11 (BSB)
In Matthew 7:9-11, Jesus tells us about how earthly parents often know how to give good gifts to their children. Parents -as imperfectly human as they are - always want to see their kids thrive. Therefore, how much more does your heavenly Father - who is perfect - want you to thrive.
God gets no glory when we are anxious, depressed and heavy laden with burdens. He wants us well. He wants us to thrive. Therefore, pursue mental wellness too, and if it means getting psychotherapy for your mental health.
